Stereax® Battery Technology

Stereax is a type of lithium-ion battery, which, instead of using liquid or polymer electrolyte, has a ceramic ion conductor. This is particularly important because batteries are a key challenge in the electronics, energy and automotive spaces.

Stereax Solid State Micro-Batteries for IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a driver of market growth and battery technology development. IoT has similar pressures to other electronic devices, such as cost and availability, but also have specific requirements that need a different approach to battery technology. Stereax products for IoT have several benefits over currently available lithium-ion batteries:

  • Small size in both footprint and thickness down to mm-scale
  • Increased energy density
  • Faster charge rates
  • Low leakage current
  • Up to 10 years’ life span
  • Non-flammable
  • Customisable and scalable
  • -40ºC to +150ºC operating range

Solid State Batteries for EVs and Stationary Power

Ilika’s Goliath technology is a solid state lithium battery with the potential to transform the performance and safety of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (EVs and PHEVs) and stationary power applications. The major benefits of Goliath solid-state batteries compared to lithium ion batteries are:

  • Non-flammable through the use of a solid electrolyte as opposed to the organic solvent used in current lithium-ion batteries
  • Much faster charging times
  • Increased energy density
  • Increased life cycle of up to 10 years

Stereax Product Road Map

  • The MedTech roadmap looks at increasingly smaller footprints and smaller currents (μA), making them ideal for small sensor driven devices developed in MedTech. Current product: M50
  • The Industrial roadmap increases the amount of energy for a footprint at the cm-scale. All products on this road map can support extended temperature range to +150°C in Industrial IoT. Current products: M250, P180
  • The xEV roadmap develops energy dense, safe cells for electric vehicles, stationary power and consumer electronics under our Goliath programme

Compelling Financial Savings using Solid State Batteries

Using solid state batteries instead of cabling devices or using short life incumbent technologies can make a lot of financial sense. Our Commercial page describes how Solid State Batteries can save your business money, and how you can interact with Ilika's IP licensing business model.
